Mures Fishing

Pioneers of quality for Australian foods

The Mure family has been self-employed in the fish trade since 1965 when they bought the fishing boat Aquanita. This vessel was licensed to catch rock lobster and prawns. It had a half-ton capacity snap freezer and a four-ton holding room. The vessel was an accredited export facility licensed to process and export seafood products. The license number was 41. Our current factory also has AQIS export accreditation for our range of seafood soups and this number is 6729 which means that 6688 establishments have been registered in Australia since these standards have been set which makes the Mure family pioneers in the industry.

In 1975 Mures started Australia's first mussel farm at Margate, Tasmania making us pioneers in aquaculture.

In 1976 the fishing vessel Melicent was built specifically to target blue eye trevalla and in so doing Melicent made blue eye available to the public for 12 months of the year. Mures were responsible for developing this fishery and for making blue eye Tasmania's premium fish.

When blue eye went to quota in 1998 Mures were forced to secure their supply by buying 65 tonnes of quota. Mure's two boats Kiella and the recently launched 72 foot Diana currently catch this quota to maintain a continual supply of fresh, hook-caught product to the Tasmanian market. Mures are the largest quota holder of blue eye in this high quality line fishery. Ling is a relatively new species to be targeted by our boats and is proving to be very popular.
