
Blue Mussels
Mytilus EdulisSize: To 12.7 cm in length (Commonly less than 9 cm.) Habitat: Often found on exposed reefs, rocks or jetty debris. Usually found in clumps or in groups attached by byssal threads. Fishery: Main fishery is aqua cultured. However, divers still collect mussels from coasts of eastern and western Australia. Aqua culture industry exists in Tasmania, Western Australia and Victoria. Remarks: Mussels are harvested at around 6-9 cm in length, 12-18 months age. When spawning, mussels produce up to 8 million eggs, all 0.07 mm in diameter. The NZ Green Mussel (Perna canaliculus) is sold locally as frozen half shell and meat. Domestic: Chilled and packed for transport in random weight bags or 15 kilo poly boxes. Available: Live, frozen on the half shell, frozen meat or smoked.
