
Ocean Perch
Helicolenus barathriSize: To 47cm and 1.8 kg (commonly less than 35 cm and 0.8 kg). Habitat: Marine; demersal on the shelf and slope of southern Australia 10 – 800 m depth. Fishery: Caught mainly as bycatch of trawl fisheries and to a lesser extent the hook industry although good catches of high quality have been caught. Remarks: About 100 species occur locally but only a dozen or so are marketed. They have venomous spines in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins which are capable of inflicting a painful wound. Export: Chilled and packed gilled and gutted for air transport in 15 kilo poly boxes. Domestic: Chilled and packed for transport in random weight bags or 15 kilo poly boxes. Frozen, layer packed in 10 kilo shatter pack cartons. Fish Cuts: Available scaled gilled and gutted, skin on fillets and skin off fillets! Recipes: Tasman Cocktail or Kokoda
